pipe support was created by ifeanyi
hi guys!
my designer request to support lines with valves ranging from 6 - 24 inch at the stud bolt of the flange because of space constrain but i objected stating some obvious disadvantages such as bolts snapping as a result of the weight of the valve after along time but he seems not satisfied, is there any source , standard or what ever that clearly discourages this practice i can lay my hands?????
thanks

I'm unaware of any codes against this type of support, maybe individual company standards? However we use this type of support a number of times here in the oil fields and co-generation facilities that are constructed in this area. As your designer indicated they are primarily dictated because of space constrains, and I developed a detail to cover an installation for a small 2" flange support
File Attachment:

But we draw the line size wise at 6", anything above that has to have a more standard support design, weight and vibrations are the main issues ...stud breakage, not an issue.
