Plot Plan versus Site Plan was created by Flowr8
Is there a difference between a plot plan and a site plan, or are they synonymous? I have recently been told that what I consider a plot plan can also be called a site plan, but in honesty, while I'm not sure that's true, I'm unsure of a clear definition between the two, should there be a difference.

Yes, sometimes plot plan & site plan are the same however they might differ company to company.
For example in my company-
A plot plan is an engineering plan drawing which shows the process blocks, utility blocks, building blocks, roads, piperack interconnection of a proposed project site/plot at a an appropriate scale. The plot plan is a plan view showing all the facilities inside battery limit of the plot for the plant. Also some important relevant facilities like main access road etc.
Whereas, Site Master Plan is even bigger picture of the relevant selected plot/site for the plant which will be similar to a map kind of a thing showing where exactly the selected plot is located with respect to other geographical things around the plot like river, road, terrains et, seashore etc.

I only remember a "Site Plan" document used on a project once.
The Project was a Grassroots/Greenfield major Refinery installation.
The Civil Engineering Group prepared the "Site Plan".
It showed:
- the whole property including some features outside the property lines
- the Property Boundary Lines proper
- the corner bench marks with location
- all terrain elevation contours
- all above ground features with identification and location

Later after the Geo-technical (sub-surface) survey was done then rock shelves and "soft" spots were shown, identified and dimensionally located

Later the Plant Layout/Piping Design Group used the data from the "Site Plan" to prepare and issue the "Overall Plot Plan" (for the total facility) and all the individual Unit "Plot Plans".

With this in mind I see the "Site" Plan as the Before and the Overall "Plot Plan" as the After. Some Projects need both.

Do it once and Do it Right

Yes Jop, right now I am working on a Gas metering station facility where the gas is coming from LNG carriers
>re-gasified on the offshore platform--->then transported by big subsea pipeline---->to the onshore metering station
>after metering it will be transported again to the customers via cross-country pipelines.

Now for this example, Plot plan is being developed for Onshore metering facility & also for the offshore platform.
Site master plan is being developed by civil dept which is showing the big picture of the entire thing right from the re-gasification terminal to the onshore facility & from there to the customers battery limit.

With reference to this example you can clearly understand this Site Master Plan is similar to a geographical map shows the big picture.

This document might not be so helful after the FEED phase of the project but as I am working on the SELECT (Pre-FEEDD) phase of the project the Site Master Plan is important for the DEFINE (just before the FEED starts) phase of the project.

Hope this helped.

Thank you cj.abhijit and Jop. This confirms for me what I was thinking. It's been many years since I worked on a project with a site plan, and I wasn't turning up much with a Google search. Specifically, the conversation I had was surrounding as-builting the plot plans in existing facilities. I am of the belief that we should be maintaining up to date plot plans, whereas others believe an up to date site drawing is sufficient. The site drawing that they're referring to is actually a survey drawing that shows roads, buildings, tankage, etc., and other features such as camps, but does not include equipment tag numbers, nor any equipment inside the buildings.

My argument is that nobody refers to a survey drawing for new project development, and everybody revises the existing plot plan. Currently we have multiple CAD files of the original plot plan, each reflecting a different project and I'm pushing to have them combined into one updated drawing.
