Well let's see what's wrong with the 3d model from a design standpoint?
PDMS CAD 3D MODEL REVIEW on Youtube
The model looks great from afar.
This obviously is not a real unit, because there is way too much wrong.
Lets see if you guys can list some of the obvious wrongs from a "piping Design" standpoint.
Maybe some of these young CAD jocks who think modeling is designing can learn a thing or two from the seasoned designers here.
So, please force yourself to watch the video and start listing some of the obvious mistakes.

- location/orientation of the heat exchangers! I’m seeing major maintenance issues trying to pull the tube bundles! This area needs to be easily accessible and clear!
- Also I see a lot of vessels that have been “caged-in†by the associated piping! Again causing maintenance issues!
- Seems to have a lot of piping that is run as an individual line as apposed to running them together in a pipeway.
- Another thing I noticed was there seems to be a lot of piping that is a tripping hazard up on the platforms and walkways! (As someone stated earlier)
- The last thing I noticed …and this is minor, there are no “drop-bars†on the caged ladders

Paul commented that:
The video was no doubt intended to be a demo of what is possible, not an example of good design.
Mea culpa for linking to it at PipingDesign.com I guess.
pipingdesign.com/viswan_wright_w ... ver_be.pdf might be a good read.
I am president of SPED Calgary and we're doing our best up here to educate pipers about our fascinating choice of profession.

It does show what's possible, but I think it's just as important that it shows up the fact that not all nice, shiny, rendered 3D models are the last word in piping design and plant layout.
This video can be used as an example of a practice that is now a part of our industry and is a practice that is detrimental to piping as a profession.
This is the practice of hiring young guys who are "fast on the buttons" in favour of seasoned pipers.
I'm not saying that youth shouldn't be given a chance, but if a company hires Cad Operators when they should be hiring Senior Pipers, this is the kind of design they can expect.
What this model shows is a basic lack of training on the part of the Cad Operator who modeled it.
The problem is "the spec let me put it in" mentality.
This video needs to be held up as an example of why companies must invest in Senior Designers AND invest in training for the young guns.
I'm a big fan of SPED and the work SPED does in educating pipers and hopefully more and more companies will look at the value that SPED is bringing to the table.
