Let's list down the fire prone equipments/facilities we come across normally when we are dealing with the process plant layout.

Fire prone equipments/facilities are either the source of ignition or they are the sources to catch fire. Extreme care need to be taken while locating these items in the plant. Most importantly we need to ensure that we have enough separation distances in between the other facilities in the plant. Also, it is important to consider the prevailing wind direction when locating the fired equipment.

Here are the equipment/facility I know,
-Furnace
-Heater
-Electrical Substation
-Incinerator
-Burn pits
-Elevated or ground flares
-Gas turbines
-Electric power generators
-Boiler
-Vehicles on the roads in the plant also are possible source of ignition.

There must be more equipment/facilities to get added in the above list.

Also there are many other ways while locating any equipment

Experienced pipers out here must be knowing more about these things ....can we just discuss & put more light on this matter?

Good list. I can only add one item.
A Sulphur (Sulfur) Furnace is a source of ignition.

A sulphur furnace is generally a large horizontal cylindrical vessel of carbon steel lined internally with refractory brick. An air stream enters the furnace at one end and liquid sulphur is fed in at the same end through a sulphur gun. Sulphur atomization is achieved usually by a simple spray nozzle or spinning cup. The mix ignites.
The furnace is closed coupled to a boiler in which much of the heat of the sulphur combustion is removed.
A sulphur furnace provides for the complete combustion of molten sulphur with oxygen to sulphur dioxide according to the following reaction:
The reaction is highly exothermic resulting in a large temperature rise. A side reaction of sulphur dioxide with oxygen forms sulphur trioxide.
The design of the sulphur furnace must achieve good gas mixing and full combustion of sulphur prior to leaving the furnace and entry to the boiler section. Sulphur droplets impinging on baffle or checker walls will vapourize immediately and burn to sulphur dioxide. The internals of a sulphur furnace are important to ensure complete combustion of sulphur to sulphur dioxide.

Thanks very much for the reply.
Recently i got an opportunity to work on SRU unit & I am sure the large cylinderical vessel together with a boiler connected to it is what we normally get to see in SRU unit itself.

Do we have any ways of safeguarding the situation other than seperation distanser?

The Sulphur (Sulfur) Furnace is a source of ignition, therefore it should be located up-wind of any potential vapor leaks.

I have never done this or seen this done in any project but I found this option in the company standard.
Kindly check & revert if you have dealt with this in your past experience.

Safeguarding is done either buy a separation distance (that's what we normally do) or else by introducing a physical barrier (considering it will not obstruct access).

Introducing a physical barrier...hmmm.....does anybody have any examples on this option of safeguarding by a permanent physical barrier separating an entire fire prone equipment/facility from the others?
