In piping remember this:
#1 - There is a Rule for everything
#2 - For every Rule there will be an exception
#3 - The Client is always the Client (or the Boss is always the Boss)
#4 - Remember Rule #1

Issue - Operating Aisles
#1 The width of Operating aisles is in an issue where what the Client says is normally what it will be.
If the Client wants 800mm (2'-6") then give them 800mm, If some other Client want 1500mm (5'-0") then give him 1500mm

#2 The exception. If there is a National, State, Provincial or other Governmental Law or Code that dictates something wider then follow that Law or Code.

#3 Present the facts to the Client in such a way that does not make him angry but wins the point.

#4 Keep the Client happy is rule #1

Maintenance Aisle: These are normally 10'-0" wide (*) and 10'-0" high (*). Wide enough and high enough to allow passage of maintenance trucks and fork lifts. The minimum width and height of a maintenance aisle is governed by the plants mobile equipment. These are typically located down the center of the process unit under the pipe rack.

Operating Aisles: These are normally 2'-6" wide (*) and 7'-0" high (*). Wide enough and high enough to allow passage of people. These are typically located down the front (suction end) of a line of pumps to provide easy access to the suction and discharge valves as well as the instrumentation.

Access Way: These are normally 2'-6" wide (*) and 7'-0" high (*). These are normally provides and located so people can easily move from one point in the plant to another. They might be located between two pieces of equipment to allow rapid access from one end of an exchanger to the other end during operations or maintenance.

(*) or more depending on Client criteria.
