The ASME B31.1 and 31.3 do not address this issue.
Please use "search" and look up "Pup"
And no it does not need to be 1D

The spool can be ANY length, only when your about 3" or shorter does and issue come up with overlapping heat effected zone during welding. Try reading these forum posts:

To be clear ......
There does not have to be a spool between fittings.
They can of course be placed fitting to fitting.
Only when a spool is actually needed does the minimum distance question arise.

I haven't seen such thing in codes. In some sizes we need pup piece between Tee & High rating Flange (flange for valve installation) for bolt removal/replace. (If I weld 2"~10" size Tee with 600# Flange, Bolt can't removed, So we need to add pup piece between Flange & Tee).
