Are you saying "Back of Pipe" is used everywhere? Every country, every company, every project? I don't think so. I seem to remember using the "Common Center Line of Pipe".

Reason:
Pipe is dimensioned center line to center line. If you are lining up the back of pipe then every size must be calculated from the reference point (back of pipe). You are prone to making more mistakes. Then what do you do with Insulated lines, do you line up the back of insulation of insulated lines with the back of pipe for non-insulated lines?

The use of the common center line as the drop point then all lines drop on the same coordinate saves time and reduces errors.

I agree to you Jop however consider another situation where we need to support the vertical leg of the piping at a common support. There we need common "Back of Pipe" for easy supporting possibility.

Example could be utility lines (SWAN) going up to level 3 of the process plant steel building along the structure if you consider common "Back of Pipe" instead of common Center lines it will facilitate better supporting of different dia piping.

Hope this helps.

As Abhijit said above back of Pipe (BOP) and Bottom of pipe (BOP) should be treated as the same thing and the main reason is to allow for common support points. Treat your vertical rack the same way you would a horizontal. If the line is insulated you raise it up or move it out the required shoe height. If the line requires rubbing strips raise it up or move it out the required thickness.

I am constantly amazed that people either don't read the original post question and answer it and only it first or they answer a totally different question.

The question here was: "why is back of pipe kept same for pipe branches dropping from pipe rack?"

I answered the posted question.
