Do you not see Latr-o-lets and Thread-o-lets used on elbows and tees for thermowells!?? Now I'm not suggesting full size connections on fittings, but small diameter, as I said, I see it all the time!

Yep, we do this regularly.
The main consideration we find is the distance between the toes of the welds, on tees mostly. (the butt weld to the branch connection welds) Most Clients have a given minimum distance between the spacing of welds which may or may not differ from the applicable Standard.
