hedpe, I have read Anton's reply to your queries on elevations and he is being quite polite and helpful. Let me give you an insight into the real world, I have run Piping Departments and trained designers and you need to listen to what he's saying. You can not work in this game not knowing the basics, being able to operate a drawing package or draft nice pictures means exactly that, you are a draughtsman not a designer. You need training, if you have been taken on as a junior than you need to start asking questions, it is your manager's responsibility to get you trained to do that job. Websites like this are fantastic, however they can not take the place of proper training. If you do not get the basics you are likely to make a mistake in the future that could cost a lot of money or worse prove to be fatal. I do not intend hurting your feelings but you need to understand the issue, not knowing what CL or BOP stands for is a basic necessity, as are your earlier queries on pipe schedules and line numbering.

As an aside, in the old days of board drafting the wheat and the chaff was pretty easily separated. You either had drawing skills or you didn't. These days (since a lot of the old guard has retired/died) anyone with a computer and a copy of AutoCAD often qualifies as a draftsman.

I have to complement both Ruairi & pipingguy on there answers here. In the old days major companies trained alot of people in proper designing techniques, then plugged them onto projects to cash in on that training ...and the low waged they paid you! *G* ...BUT the training was first rate! And as was pointed out, anybody with a computer and AutoCAD program or 3d piping program now days can claim to be piping designer! And that is just not true ...no matter what the computer program salesman tells you! To be honest I don't know nor have I heard of any regimented schooling or training to be come a piping designer! ...Other then afew drafting classes.
SO, you going to have to ask questions ...I've never had any one tell me when I asked they were too busy or flat didn't want to talk with me! ...Ask a piper any piping question and the problem becomes how to shut him up! *G* ...Having said that don't ask a designer that’s got a deadline at 5:00 to expound on the details of ball valves & cast iron fittings! ...Your liable to get afew 4 letter expletives instead! *G* So ask the questions and get copies of ALL the data sheets and "cookbook" engineering you can. After 30 years doing this I have 4 books about 3" thick each! ...And I consult them every day when I’m working! …ALSO go to the field to look at and talk with the construction people. You can’t get any better experience!…My $0.02 Good Luck! ...Mark
