Vertical loop was created by gpsvn
The expansion loops are used frequently in piping design to absorb the stress caused by expansion and contraction due to temperature changes. I notice that most of the expansion loops are in horizontal plane.

The Piping Handbook by Mohinder Nayyar also stated that vertical loops to be avoided. Would anyone explain the reason behind this ?

Remember:
- Piping R.O.T. (Rule of thumb)
#1. There is a rule for everything
#2. For every rule there will be an exception
#3. The boss is still the boss
#4. Remember rule #1

That being said:
(#1) The rule for expansion loops is horizontal. The reason for this is that two or more can be "nested" and supporting them is cheaper.
(#2) When there is reason or it is advantagus, expansion loops may be oriented in the vertical. I have installed verticle loops in long, low off-site sleeper-pipe racks by arranging the loop to jump over access roads. I have also seen loops in elavated racks hung down verticlly in locations where they posed no obstruction.
(#3) what does the boss say?
(#4) ?

Replied by gpsvn on topic I myself installed loops on
I myself installed loops on sleepers too, especially heat traced piping like alphalt lines. Those lines have so many drains and vents and I guess this is another short coming of vertical loops.

For the piggable lines, we don't have to fit as many drains and vents, as we cold use pig to fill or dewater the lines. However, I guess slugs could be a reason but I don't really know.

I like to know the reasons behind the rules, that's why I put it up here and hope among the members of this forum, I can collect as many sensible rationals as possible.
