Pipe welding qualification - there is the ASME B&PV and the AWS requirement. If we're talking here about B31 piping, then welding requirements will fall under the rules of the ASME.

There are very few piping designers who are conversant with the use of the appropriate welding specification prescribed in the B31. I find it surprising that this very important subject is not even discuss in this forum.

Why is it important - because there are some issues in welding that has a direct bearing related to piping design. And because knowing at least the appropriate welding spec that apply will ensure consistenty in design.

Can you give some specific examples so the readers have a frame of reference.

1. CSB case study report related to the fire and explosion at an oil field in Mississippi where contractors died. It happened while performing pipe welding. If the work package has been properly prepared addressing the issue related to hot work - well it could have been prevented.
2. Preparing the piping design details related to hot-tap. If the designer is not even aware of the API provision then he should not be designing work related to hot-taps. And part ot the API requirement is knowledge of welding process.
3. Selection of piping related to joining of dissimilar metals - where welding is a crucial part of the work package. Fortunately this topic is now covered in the CASTI book. If its not spec out properly and the commodity is a hazardous material then - kaboom. Precisely the type of incident that code users are trying to prevent.

I can cite some more. A good reading on this subject is the article by Walter Sperko (im sure the name is familiar to some) - How good do piping system welds really need to be. Im not sure if its available in the web, but try googling it.
