SW fittings are not possible to be radiographed...

But even if u can, youre not getting much from the results of the xrayed joint - its fillet all around. Dye-pen and visual should be sufficent for this type of joint.

If anybody is interested, a good article appeared in the past issue of the AWS Journal comparing a seal weld from the strenght weld. Theres also a good article that was published in Chemical Engineering journal on the proper way of performing a SW joint including some do's and don'ts.

I used to subscribe to AWS and Chemical Engineering journal (among some of the magazines that i read) few years back. I dont normally scanned them electronically.

There are several other publications like the Hydrocarbon Proceesing and Chemical Processing where articles related to Piping were featured in the past (if you qualify, you can subscribe free).

I dont know if youre also aware that WRC and SwRI have published several documents related to Piping from equipment nozzle load all the way to piping vibrations.

A lot of piping designers are not even aware of the tools available to handle problems related to in-service piping and fix them. Designing is the easy part - maintaining the piping system in the plant for the life cycle of the equipment is the difficult (and more challenging) part.

You also need to consider what function of piping system. Socket weld fittings create a gap where "crude" can build up. This build up can do a number of unwanted things to the process, such as contamination, the growth of bacteria, etc. So you need to understand what the results of you choices can be, including safety.

Are you familiar with the use of Lokring?
Lokring fittings give the same integrity of a welded joint, but dont require any hotwork or welding.
The skill level to install Lokring is minimal and fitters can be trained to install Lokring within 30 minutes.
Lokring does not require 360 access round your pipework and can be used on both old and new pipework, even to the extent that it can be installed on a live system (If safe to do so).
Lokring does not require any NDT inspection and insataltion can be verified by a quick visual inspection.
More info on Lokring can be found at www.lokring.com

Lokring is available worldwide and is used by most of the biggest names in the Petrochemical, nuclear, refining and industrial processing markets, for both maintenance and complete new instalations, with reported cost savings comapred to the overall cost of welding.

Most companies will not allow SW fittings upstream of a relief device, when an RV is off a pipe or equipment.
