question about olets was created by macdaddy20
When using olets, is there a max size to size limit for branch and run size. In other words, If I'm adding a olet to a 8" line, what is the max size allowable for a branch connection? Can you put a 8" branch off an 8" line?

I have to wonder why you (with 32 years of experience) are asking this question. You should already know the answer to this.

What does the Piping Material Line Class Material Specification say? There should be a Branch Table for this.

The Piping Material Engineer would have considered the Commodity, Operating Pressure and Operating Temperature to make the Branch tables.

Low Pressure, Low Temperature Services (Cooling Water) would normally have;
- Size-to-size branches = TEE
- Size to one size smaller branch = Reducing TEE
- Size to one or more sizes smaller branch = Stub-In

Higher pressures, higher temperature Services requiring Branch Reinforcement (Hydrocarbon Liquids or Vapors) would normally have:
- Size-to-size branches = TEE
- Size to one size smaller branch = Reducing TEE
- Size to one or more sizes smaller branch = Weld-O Let

What is your position/job relative to this situation (Piping Designer? Piping Material Engineer? Client?)
What are you not telling us about this situation? Is this all new piping or is this a new branch off an existing line?

Yes...your right. I do know the answer. However the Engineer/Client I'm working with questioned my answer. This is a retro fit project that doesn't have quite enough room for cutting and adding a reducing tee (which the spec call for). The line in question is a 8" and needs a 6" tap. This is on a low pressure, low temp line off a cooler. I told him a WOL wouldn't work and he argued saying it would. He claims he's seen it done. But I told him that doesn't make it right! I want to redesign and replace a large section of the existing piping to allow for a reducing tee. He doesn't want to do that. So I thought I would post it on the form and let him see what others thought.

If you need an 8" x 6" branch, that's a fairly conventional run/branch size combination.

(I couldn't comment on whether this is in your branch connection chart though).

I have worked with specs that call out all reducing branches with olets / stub-ins.

There is no reason why, on a low pressure / low temp line, you couldn't use an 8"x6" stub-in.

"IF" there is not enough space for a Red Tee and you want to put on a W.O.L. the issue I would have is the heat effected zone when the welders added this W.O.L., it would be substantial!!! ...That's going to take a lot of welding to get that size W.O.L. on, and that whole section will be glowing orange before it's finished. To me that would mean you'd need to do a post weld heat treat ...but you say ..."this is on a low pressure, low temp line" ...so it should work. Not pretty, and against your piping spec (which is a different issue) ...but I've seen it done too. I'd keep trying to push the Red Tee and hold to the piping spec., but don't make an enemy of this engineer doing so, ...Good Luck!
FYI ...my part of the world O-lets are normally good up to (but not including) half the size of the main header!
