Piping Student Needs help :) was created by SusieLu182
Good Evening everyone,

I just stumbled on to this website on my search for finding out some information on the Process Piping job industry. My name is Susie, I'm 26, I am a piping design student at Tyler Junior College here in Tyler, Texas, and I was hoping maybe someone or a few of you could help me out with a little homework assignment of mine. I am supposed to talk to a few people in the industry and ask about how the job market is, any advice you could give me, what kind of projects you guys are working on, and what kind of projects have you done in the past. Any information you could give me about your jobs would be wonderful, you don't have to give me any personal details, or where you work or anything like that.

Thank you in advance!!

"IF" you like being in the "middle" of everything, you picked a GREAT profession! You can make some pretty good money, but you ain't going to get rich! You'll have multiple jobs (employers) over your career, and you could work world wide. Normally you don't see too many women in this profession, and as I have learned women just don't think about how things are put together like men do. SO after "cutting my throat" with that last sentence, the few women that I have worked with are some of the best pipers I have ever run across! It can be a trying occupation, especially in these times, with the introduction of computers, 3D piping programs, supervisors with no "real" experience ...the list goes on! Me personally, I wouldn't change jobs if I won the lottery tomorrow! Welcome to the "meat grinder"!

The best thing I can say to you - do not get into this profession. It is the most unstable one with many idiots. If I had it to do over again I would have never have gotten into it.

hmiddle,

I've got to say, that's a bit of a harsh assessment of the piping design profession, but that's your view, and I'm sorry you feel that way.

It seems to me that there are very few jobs around that remain "stable" these days, but I think, bye and large, there is generally work to be found, all be it, not necessarily on your doorstep ... but as a piper I "have hard-hat, will travel!"

As for idiots in the game ... yea, of course there are, but idiots are everywhere, and I've made many friendships over the years through piping, and when it comes to personal interaction with other pipers, the good certainly outweighs the bad.

I can only speak from my experience of life as a piper, I've seen good times, and more recently, bad times in my short career (almost 20 yrs) and everyone's experience will be different .... but I would like to think, that when I retire, and look back on my career, I could say, that I had a career I enjoyed .... mostly!!
