North direction on plot plan

Why normally North direction is shown on plot plan? Can't we use other directions like south? Is it due to geographical location or wind direction etc?
Is it easy to understand the plot plan with North direction or it will be same for other direction too?

North has been the accepted default direction in navigation and mapping for centuries. If North is shown then all other directions are implied . To change it would be pointless and create confusion
