PDS Newbie was created by trav
Hi Guys,

just after some info here, i come from an AutoPLANT backround and have recently been put on a PDS job, I'm really in the deep end here as no training has been provided (i've just been handed down some old Intergraph Piping & equipment guides that i am doing in my spare time after everyone has left for the day) is there any other PDS info etc out there that could be beneficial for me?

any help would be appreciated

Cheers,

Trav

Dear, Tyro (look it up) I will offer some thoughts.

It is very difficult to be purely objective. We do not know what type of company you are working at or it's size. We do not know who the client is on your project or the kind of project. We do not know anything about your background, education or technical training. We do not even know if you are a "Piper."

You have allowed yourself to be placed in a situation that is over your head. You are stumbling around doing things on your own that could be totally wrong and in some situations might do real damage. You need to stand up for your self and your (assumed) profession.

Look at it this way. You learned to fly a small two seat "Piper" private airplane. You have now been placed in the cockpit pilots seat of a giant 747 loaded with passengers and told to take-off. You have had (as you say) no training or instructions. You have apparently not been given a flight instructor or even a Co-Pilot to assist you. What do you do? You need to get up out of that seat and get off that plane RIGHT NOW!

You need to go to the Piping Department Manager if there is one or the Project Manager and tell them that you need proper training in PDS. If this company cares at all about their client's and their employees they will respect your honesty and integrity. They will take proper steps to provide the training required to make you a productive and profitable "Tool".

If they seek to punish you for speaking the truth, then you don't want to be associated with that kind of conduct anyway. Yes, I know that the economy is not good but even if you get a job "Flipping" burgers they at least "Train" you to "Flip" them right.

If I was the Client and I found out the company assigned a Newbie to my project with no training, no instruction and no mentor I would consider pulling my work out all together or never awarding another project to them at all.
