AutoCAD Plant3D Launched was created by Anton
Autodesk, today, launched AutoCAD Plant3D -

Design, model, and document process plants with AutoCAD Plant 3D 2010. Built on the familiar AutoCAD platform, AutoCAD Plant 3D brings modern 3D design to plant designers and engineers. Features like spec-driven design and standard parts catalogs help streamline the placement of piping, equipment, and support structures. Integrated AutoCAD® P&ID functionality and quicker generation of isometric and orthographic drawings support productivity, accuracy, and coordination.

I am about to move from 2D to 3D. I have to make a $10 - 20k decision.

How does AutoDesk 3D Plant compare to Bentley AutoPlant or PlantSpace? How about CadWorx? Intergraph SmartPLant? CADPIPE?

I was brought up on AutoCAD but have been stuck in Betley-ville for the past 4 to 5 years. I have customers that need 2D AutoCAD and others that need MircroStation as turnover doc's.

I need a real Process Piping package, not a Plumbing & HVAC suite. I need basic structural, equipment, piping (ANSI & API), Intellegent P&ID's, HVAC & Cable Trays, BOM's, ISO's, Plans, Elevations, Sections & Details, Concrete & steel supports, etc, etc, etc.

Need to do Clash Detection.

Need to do Customer walkthroughs or flythroughs. Do I need to also get Navisworks or another Navigator?

Any and all suggestions will help. I've been reviewing online demos and have had a few

it is my opinion that you cannot make the decision alone. Your client will or should be involved. if they tell you they don't care then you will have to make the decision based upon known things within your control. What type of training do your people have. do you have $$ to spend on further training. What about hardware costs (servers). Each of the platforms you listed all have their own benefits. you will need to determine which best suits your needs.. Cost vs functionality or ease to learn etc.

I have no real opinion regarding ACAD 3D as I have never used it. I have tested Cadworx and was impressed with its simplicity, however I think that is also why I would stay away from it. I have admin'd SmartPlant3D before. and I can tell you that it is very heavy on the admin side requiring a lot more time to config and maintain than other systems. it does however provide you with an excellent platform to do any project regardless of size. I have been using AutoPlant for several years so that is what I am most comfortable with. AutoPlant is easy to admin, easy to config (once you get it figured out) and easy to learn. it is not nearly as expensive as other platforms and can handle pretty much any size project.
