Hi All,

Over a discussion, we came to Steam Tracing on Vertical Runs. Someone called for Winding of tracer along main pipe where there is any vertical run in main piping (Main piping which is being traced). I heard this for first time.
Can someone tell the reson to have thiese windings and why this is not done to trace any horizontal piperun?

There is a risk is in putting too much heat into the "Product" and boiling it.

Think about this carefully and compare it to the amount of tracer that would be in contact with an equivalent length of horizontal pipe (for the same product and temperature), you should be using the same tracer-to-pipe ratio. In this case you may need to wind it to insure proper drainage of the condensate.

For a Vertical pipe with tracing - You should make sure that you have the steam flow to the tracer enter at the top of the run and the condensate removed at the bottom.
