    Plant Layout, Piping Design and Engineering Books for a Piping Library:

    The following books are my own personal recommendation for a Comprehensive Piping Library that i think some companies should consider for the use of Piping Designers and Engineers. Many companies do have impressive Piping Libraries that are either or both, Hard Copy Libraries or Virtual Libraries in PDF format, e.g. via registered On-line access to the Knovel Library or Engineering Village Referex Library. However, it is amazing how many designers and engineers have not been informed of how to quickly access these resources. Often this is only communicated by word of mouth, which means not everyone has been informed.
    If you do not have access to a Company Library or Virtual Library, some of these books can be previewed at Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.com, however, the “Look Inside” facility is usually limited to only a few pages.
    Alternatively, some of these books can be previewed via Google Books website, in some cases only a few pages, some give a search facility to view a specific section and some let you view the whole book.

    1. Process Plant Layout and Piping Design
    by Ed Bausbacher and Roger Hunt (22 Jul 1993)
    Contents:
    The Basics of Plant Layout.
    Plant Layout Specification.
    Plot Plans.
    Compressors.
    Drums.
    Exchangers.
    Furnaces.
    Pumps.
    Reactors.
    Towers.
    Pipe racks.
    Structures.
    Underground Piping
    Instrumentation.
    Process Liquid Storage Tanks.
    Stress Analysis.
    Computer Aided Design.
    This is considered by many to be the bible for Onshore Plant Layout and Piping Layout Designers. it is used as the basis for Plant Layout and Piping Design Courses run by the Society of Piping Engineers and Designers (SPED). However, this book does not deal with the basics of valves, flanges, fittings, components, fabrication, piping data and dimension tables. Some will argue that the earlier Rip Weaver books (mentioned below) are the bible for designers, but personally i think Ed Bausbachers book is more comprehensive and up to date for Plant Layout and Piping Layout.

    2. Process Piping Design: Volumes 1 and 2
    by Rip Weaver (Dec 1973)
    The books cover both Plant Layout, Piping Design and the basics of valves, flanges, fittings, components, fabrication, piping data and dimension tables, although all are imperial dimensions and not metric versions.

    Process terms.
    Plant Arrangement and Storage Tanks.
    Process Unit Plot Plans.
    Piping Systems and Details ( basically Underground Piping, Firewater Piping and Steam Tracing
    Pipe Fabrication.
    Vessels.
    Instrumentation.
    Plus Dimension Tables for Pipe, Fittings, and Valves in Imperial Sizes Only.
    Contents Vol 2:
    Pumps and Turbines.
    Compressors.
    Fired Heaters.
    Exchangers.
    Piping Flexibility

    3. The Piping Guide: For the Design and Drafting of Industrial Piping Systems
    by David R Sherwood and Dennis J Whistance (Apr 2010)
    This covers Piping Design Detailing including the basics of valves, flanges, fittings, components, fabrication, piping data and dimension tables. Latest version includes metric versions of data and tables. The Structural Steel sizes are only the American Standards. There is only a small section on Piping layout.

    Pipe, Fittings, Flanges, Reinforcements: In-line Equipment and Support Equipment.
    Valves, Pumps, Compressors, and Types of Process Equipment.
    Organization of Work: Job Responsibilities, Drawing Office Equipment and Procedures.
    Drafting: Process and Piping Drawings including Drawing Symbols, Showing Dimensions, and Bills of Material.
    Design of Piping Systems: Including Arrangement, Supporting, Insulation, Heating, venting and draining of Piping, Vessels and Equipment.
    Standardsand codes: for Piping Systems, pipe, pipe supports, Flanges, Gaskets, Fittings, Traps, Pumps, Vessels, Heat Exchangers, Symbols, and Screwthreads.
    Abbreviations: for Piping drawings and industrial Chemicals.
    Also included are Various Dimensional Charts and Tables in Imperial Sizes (and Metric Sizes in the latest edition of this book). This typically includes Pipes, Fittings, Flanges, Valves, Pipe Spacing, Pipe Support Spans, Personnel Clearances, Stairs, American Steel Section Sizes, Weights etc.

    4. Process Plant Layout
    by Mecklenburgh J. C. (1 Oct 1985)
    This is a book by the Institute of Chemical Engineers. I have used this book when i could not find the information i required in Ed Bausbachers book mentioned above.

    5. The Planning Guide to Piping Design
    by Richard J Beale (1 Oct 2010)
    This book is a very useful guide not only for Lead Designers and Engineers, but also for trainees as an overview of how to run a piping design project.
    6. Process Piping Systems (Chemical Engineering)
    by CHEM ENG MAG (1 Oct 1980)
    This book is a collection of articles from The Chemical Engineering Magazine prior to 1980 and relating to the process systems considerations of Piping Layout.
    7. Process Heat Exchange
    by “Chemical Engineering” (1 Mar 1980)
    This book is another collection of articles from The Chemical Engineering Magazine prior to 1980 relating to process heat exchange considerations of Piping Layout.
    8. Chemical Engineering Guide to Heat Transfer Volumes 1 and 2
    by “Chemical Engineering” (Aug 1986)
    These books are a collection of articles about process piping and process equipment.
    9. Piping Handbook (McGraw-Hill Handbooks)
    by Mohinder L. Nayyar (1 Nov 1999)
    This book i think is more for Piping and Materials Engineers.
    10. Piping Design Handbook
    by John J. McKetta Jr (29 Jan 1992)
    This book is also more for Piping and Materials Engineers.
    11. Piping and Pipeline Engineering: Design, Construction, Maintenance, Integrity, and Repair (Dekker Mechanical… by George A. Antaki (28 May 2003)
    This book is more for Piping, Materials and Stress Engineers.
    12. Piping Calculations Manual (McGraw-Hill Calculations)

    This book is also more for Piping, Materials and Stress Engineers.
    13. Pipe Stress Engineering
    by Liang-Chuan Peng and Tsen-Loong Peng (15 Jun 2009)
    This book is considered by many as the bible for Stress Engineers due to the fact the author is Peng. Allthough intended for Stress Engineers, it provides a good understanding for Piping Designers of the required considerations for Piping Flexibility.

    14. Design of Piping Systems
    by M. W. Kellogg Company (6 Jul 2011)
    This book is useful for Piping Designers, Pipe Support Designers and and Piping Stress Engineers. It is a reprint of the Second Edition originally published in 1957 and i do not think it has been updated since then.
    15. Mechanical Design of Process Systems: Piping and Pressure Vessels v. 1 by A.Keith Escoe (31 Aug 1986)

    These 2 books are useful for Pipe Support Designers, Engineers and Piping Stress Engineers, as it includes calculations for piping and vessel attachments, as well as support details, including the temperature transmission through support components.
    16. Fitness-for-Service Evaluations for Piping and Pressure Vessels: ASME Code Simplified (Mechanical Engineering…

    THE MOST COMPLETE, UP-TO-DATE GUIDE TO STRESS AND STRAIN FORMULAS .
    21. Compressors and Modern Process Applications
    Heinz P. Bloch and Arvind Godse (2006)
    I only wish i had been aware of this book the first time i did Compressor layoutd, it would have been so useful.

    This includes every aspect of today’s offshore exploration and production: virtually every element of equipment used and each phase of the procedures, various specifications and relevant regulations, etc are covered in understandable terms.
    It should be a permanent part of every engineer’s baggage, and it will be as valuable to the experienced engineer as to the new recruit.
