Steel Structure inside Hexene Tank bundwall area

    Hi all,

    I have a situation where i have a 10″ Process Gas Line from / to ( bidirectional flow) Hexene Tank to Condenser. The process requirement is :
    – the line should be free drain downward at both side, meaning it should have one high point and at both end of the high point it should be free drain towards the tank and the condenser.
    The connection at the Tank is at the top portion which is around 20m.
    The condenser is located on a structure which is erected above main sleeper way and outside of the tank bundwall ( around 70~100m) from the tank).
    Now the line has to be routed for that distance with elevation around 20m for it to be connected to the condenser. Therefore some tall stanchions have to be provided to support this line.

    My questions are:
    1. What is the best solution to this situation? ( the process requirement has been referred to Process Dept. and the insisted that the requirement to be followed)
    2. What if the steel structure for the condenser is placed nearer to the tank which is inside the bundwall area with some certain distance from the tank?

    Ajax,
    I would have some questions but it sounds like you are stuck between a “Rock and a Hard Place”.

    I am guessing the 10″ line is a Pressure Balance line between the two pieces of equipment (the tank and the condenser. The condenser is an Air Cooler mounted high on a structure. Right?
    The structure is also supporting other equipment and is located where it will satisfy the greater good for the greater number (of pieces of equipment).
    If you move the Condenser to shorten the 10″ Balance line then you will need to build an additional structure and lengthen the inlet and outlet lines plus the power and controls to the condenser.

    Am I close or did I get it wrong?

    yes..you are right Jop..it is a pressure balance line…the reason for the free drain requirement is whenever condensate happen, the liquid can flow back to the tank..
    The condenser is just shell-tube type heat exchanger located at high elevation just to meet this requirement. (FYI, the plot plan was developed by other company)
    And the structure is meant to locate another heat exchanger which is having the same requirement. So meaning to say this structure is to cater for this 2 equipments only.
    Thank you for your thoughts on, if i make this connection shorter, other connections to this condenser will become longer..and it will create other problems…
    Therefore after a discussion with other colleagues, we managed to revised the routing so that the structure can be at its original place and at the same time the process requirements can be met and the condenser elevation can be lowered and standard support can be used.
