Stud Bolt Length

How this calculation works: Stud Bolt Length — Companion Article

Stud bolt length

You enter the flange, gasket, raised face, nut and the extra thread. No flange chart is stored on this page.

Formula

L = (T1 − h1) + gasket + (T2 − h2) + 2 × nut + projection

T is the flange thickness and h is the raised-face height on that flange. Enter 0 for a flat face. A blank second flange uses the first flange. Projection is the extra length past the two nuts, both ends together. The standard length rounds L up to the next 5 mm, or the next 1/4 in. A length already on that step stays as it is.

The tightening order is a star, or cross, for 4 to 48 bolts. Bolt 1 is opposite bolt 1 plus half the count. The next bolts split the largest remaining gap. The drawing joins the first four.
