Weld Inches

How this calculation works: Weld Inches — Companion Article

Estimate shop weld inches and the field welds on a straight pipe run. This is an estimate, not a fabrication quantity.

Weld inches

Estimate only. This is not a fabrication quantity, a weld map, or a material take-off. Review it before anyone uses it to order work.

Formulas

Weld inches = nominal size × number of welds

A slip-on flange counts as 2 welds. Each other joint on this page counts as 1.

Spools = ceiling of (pipe run ÷ maximum spool length)

Field welds = spools − 1

Nominal size is the NPS number. NPS 6 is 6. NPS 1/2 is 0.5. This page does not look up an outside diameter.

Shop weld inches come from the joints you list. Field welds come from the spool split and stay a separate count. The two are not added together.

Schedule factor

User-defined. Not a standard. One factor for each schedule you type. It applies to every row with that schedule. This page does not assign a factor to heavy wall.

Spool estimate

Optional. Added to the field welds from the split. Blank means none. It is not a code allowance, and it is not drawn on the sketch.
