What this tool does
NPT Thread Form gives the pitch, taper, included angle and sharp thread height for the tapered pipe thread, with the pipe’s outside diameter.
When to use it
Use it to explain a thread callout, check a threads-per-inch figure, or teach how the taper works.
Inputs
- Thread size, such as 1/2-14.
How it works
Pitch = 1 / threads per inch. The taper is 1 in 16 on diameter. The included angle is 60°. Sharp height = (√3 / 2) × pitch. The outside diameter comes from the site’s pipe schedule data.
Understanding the result
The figures show as cards.
Engineering considerations
- Thread engagement lengths are not stored. Use the standard for gauging and make-up.
- Threaded joints have code limits on size and service.
Example
1/2-14: 14 threads per inch, outside diameter 0.840 in.
Standards/references (licensed vs interim)
The form is the public 60° thread form. Verify against ASME B1.20.1. Outside diameters are interim.
Limitations/disclaimer
- No engagement lengths, no gauging data.
- The result is preliminary and needs engineering review.
