Pipe Offset — Companion Article

What this tool does
Pipe Offset solves the triangle in a pipe offset. It works for simple offsets and rolling offsets, and gives a cut length once you enter the fitting take-outs.
When to use it
Use it when a line has to step across or up to meet a nozzle or another line, and you need the travel and the cut piece between the two fittings.
Inputs
- Fitting angle: 45°, 22.5°, 60° or a custom angle between 0° and 90°.
- Simple offset: any one of offset, travel or run with the angle, or any two lengths.
- Rolling offset: roll and set.
- Take-out of each fitting, optional.
- Units: millimetres, or feet and inches to 1/16 in.
How it works
A simple offset is a right triangle. Travel = offset / sin(angle), and run = offset / tan(angle).
For a rolling offset, the true offset is √(roll² + set²). The page then solves the triangle with that true offset.
Cut length = travel − first take-out − second take-out.
Understanding the result
Travel is centreline to centreline along the angled piece. The cut length is the pipe you actually cut. If two lengths you typed do not match the angle, the page tells you.
Engineering considerations
- Use the take-out of the real fitting, from the manufacturer or your fitting tool.
- Allow for weld gaps if your shop does.
- Feet and inches are rounded to 1/16 in. That is a display, not a finer measurement.
Example
Choose 45° and an offset. The page returns travel and run. Add two take-outs to get the cut length.
Standards/references (licensed vs interim)
The page uses right-triangle geometry only. No standard table is stored.
Limitations/disclaimer
- No fitting dimensions stored. Type the take-outs.
- The result is preliminary and needs engineering review.
