Pipe by Wall — Companion Article

What this tool does
Pipe by Wall works backwards from a wall thickness. Give it a wall and, if you know it, a nominal size, and it tells you which schedule that wall is.
When to use it
Use it when a drawing, a certificate or a field measurement gives a wall but no schedule. It is also handy for checking a wall typed into a line list.
Inputs
- Wall thickness, in inches or millimetres.
- Nominal size, optional.
How it works
The page searches the same interim pipe schedule data used by Pipe by schedule, covering ASME B36.10 and the B36.19 S schedules. A match is exact within 0.0005 in or 0.005 mm.
Understanding the result
- With a nominal size and an exact match, you get the schedule.
- With a nominal size and no exact match, you get the nearest wall below and above for that size.
- Without a size, you get every exact match across sizes.
Engineering considerations
A measured wall is usually below nominal, because of mill tolerance and corrosion. Use the nearest-wall result, not an exact match, for field readings.
Example
NPS 2 with a wall of 0.154 in returns Schedule 40, exact.
Standards/references (licensed vs interim)
Licence status is interim. The numbers come from an interim extract of pipe schedule data, not from licensed ASME B36.10 / B36.19 text. The page builds its source note from the dataset and names the standard to verify against. Always check the current edition of ASME B36.10 / B36.19, or the manufacturer’s certified drawing, before you use a figure on a deliverable.
Limitations/disclaimer
- Only walls in the stored extract.
- Exact-match tolerance is tight on purpose.
- The result is preliminary and needs engineering review.
