Branch Reinforcement — Companion Article

What this tool does
Branch Reinforcement checks one welded branch connection by area replacement, following ASME B31.3 paragraph 304.3.3. It compares the metal removed by the opening with the spare metal around it, and tells you if the branch passes. If it does not, it sizes a reinforcing pad.
When to use it
Use it for a stub-in or set-on branch where you are not using a reinforced fitting such as a weldolet or a tee. It is a first check during design, before stress or a full code calculation.
Inputs
- Design pressure.
- Header outside diameter and nominal wall.
- Branch outside diameter and nominal wall.
- Branch angle, between the branch and header axes.
- Allowable stress, E, W and Y for the header. The branch and pad use the header values unless you enter their own.
- Corrosion allowance and mill undertolerance.
- Optional pad thickness and pad outside diameter.
- Units: metric or US customary.
How it works
The page first works out the pressure design thickness of the header and branch with the straight-pipe equation. Then it works out four areas:
- A1, the area to replace, from the header pressure thickness and the effective opening.
- A2, spare metal in the header wall inside the reinforcement zone.
- A3, spare metal in the branch wall, within a height of 2.5 times the wall.
- A4, the pad, if you entered one.
Where the branch or pad material is weaker than the header, its area is reduced in the same ratio. The branch passes when A2 + A3 + A4 is at least A1.
Understanding the result
You see A1 to A4, a pass or fail, and the reinforcement zone. If a pad is needed and you did not enter one, the page offers a trial pad diameter using the header wall as the pad thickness. If the zone has no room for a pad, it says so.
Engineering considerations
- Fillet welds are not counted in A4.
- The page warns when the angle is below 45 degrees, when the branch is bigger than the header, and for thin large headers with large branches. Those cases need more than this check.
- Area replacement is a pressure check only. External loads and fatigue need stress review.
Example
For a branch that fails, leave the pad blank. The page proposes a trial pad diameter. Enter that pad and run again to confirm A2 + A3 + A4 now covers A1.
Standards/references (licensed vs interim)
The method follows ASME B31.3 paragraph 304.3.3. No code table or figure is copied onto the page. You supply stresses and factors from your licensed copy.
Limitations/disclaimer
- One welded branch at a time.
- No fillet weld credit.
- Pressure only.
- The result is preliminary and needs engineering review.
