Isometric Release Gate Checklist
A structured, repeatable check before a piping isometric is released for design review, MTO, procurement, construction or fabrication.
Isometric Release Gate Checklist
Version 0.1, Practitioner Review Draft. This is a manual checklist. It does not check a drawing and it does not decide the release.

Iso Release Gate version 1.0.0
This records your check of the tool output. It does not change the tool or the engineering data.
An isometric should not be released simply because the drawing looks complete. It should be released only when the required checks have been completed, discrepancies have been resolved or formally dispositioned, and the release has been authorised. This checklist is built around that principle.
What it is
A printable A4 checklist that takes an isometric through eight release gates, from document identification to final authorisation. Each check has an acceptance criterion, a result box and space for comments, followed by a Release Decision Record for the checker and the authorised approver to complete.
Who it is for
Piping designers preparing isometrics for issue, checkers carrying out independent review, lead designers responsible for release quality, and engineering managers who want a consistent, auditable release step.
The eight gates
- Gate 0: Document and release identification. Drawing number, revision, release purpose and governing inputs.
- Gate 1: Design basis and line information. Line identity, class, service and design conditions.
- Gate 2: Routing, geometry and interfaces. Dimensions, orientation, nozzles, tie-ins, supports, and access, maintenance and constructability.
- Gate 3: Components, materials and BOM. Specification, ratings, valves, welds and MTO.
- Gate 4: Drawing presentation and fabrication information. Legibility, weld and spool details, notes and output integrity.
- Gate 5: Cross-document consistency and revision control. Agreement with the P&ID, line list and model.
- Gate 6: Technical review and outstanding actions. Checker and specialist reviews and comment closure.
- Gate 7: Final release authorisation. Approvals recorded and the correct controlled document issued.
How to use it
Apply the checklist at the release stage you are working to. Your project marks which checks apply to Review, MTO, Construction and Fabrication (R / M / C / F). Record PASS, FAIL, N/A (with a reason) or HOLD for each check. A critical failure or unresolved hold that affects the intended release stops the release until it is resolved or formally dispositioned. A recorded exception is not automatically permission to release.
The checklist does not replace project procedures, approved design documents, codes or engineering authority, and it is not a design calculation.
Status: v0.1, ready for practitioner review
This is a first draft and has not been validated for project use. I would welcome comments from practising designers, checkers and leads: which checks are missing, which should be mandatory, what evidence your CAD, PDM and document-control workflows can actually provide, and who checks and authorises on your projects. Anonymised examples of recurring checking comments (no client or project details) are also very welcome.
